Rockabillies, Here is one we missed...

Dateline: 20091018

Bill Turner Reports: Frannie's Rockin' 88;

Hey Gang,

Once again Frannie Beecher packed the house at the Bridgeport Rib House, making a club appearance in celebration of his 88th birthday. Frannie was backed by the "Heart & Soul" band, which is a really fine and versatile 5 piece combo, led by Kevin Burk -- who is an outstanding host and MC for the show. Kevin also plays keyboards in the group and has a really good singing voice. The other pieces are tenor sax; bass; drums and guitar--in addition to Frannie.

Frannie played the second set for 1 hour, and during the set, was presented with a birthday cake from the club...and a special commemorative plaque by Noel Wollman (from the NJ cable TV show "Straight Ahead Guitar") saluting his accomplishments as a musical innovator, originator, and all around gentleman.

Earlier in the afternoon, Noel Wollman taped a 30 minute interview with Frannie at Kevin Burk's house, asking him questions about the various phases of his life and career--which included some impromptu guitar playing by Frannie...unplugged. All in all it was a fine afternoon and evening, and it was great to see the draw that Frannie still has in that area of Pennsylvania.

The crowd was an interesting mix of people; old friends from the neighborhood, guitar enthusiasts, even a couple of heavy metal players from the area, and several 'retro' rockabilly types...also from the surrounding area. In a way, it reminded me of Rudy-when he used to appear at the Night Cap in Boothwyn PA in the 70s, though during that time, the music played was almost all swing, jazz and Sinatra type pop music.

In this particular setting, the Heart & Soul band did a good upbeat variety of classic rock, and oldies--which was a tailor-made mix for the crowd.

One thing's for certain--there was no better music to be heard anywhere else that night!

This is your "Roving Rockabilly Reporter" Bill Turner signing off!

Roc's NOTE; Frannie Beecher was part of the Benny Goodman Swing Orch. for three years in the late 1940's before joining Bill Haley And The Sadlemen and Frannie is the voice you hear in the begining of Bill Haley and the Comets original recording of "See You Later Allagator". Also note Bill Turner toured as a Comet with Bill Haley in the mid 70's.

To: Oneida Bingo and Casino Entertainment Director,
In 2002, Oneida Casino hosted the first Rockin’ 50’s Fest, which included over one hundred acts, primarily rockabilly. Fans from all over the world attended the week long festival. Luckily, for the fans, the casino decided to have another festival in 2005. Again, fans from all over the world attended. In 2007, it happened again with a third installment. We, the fans, look forward to these festivals and feel that the Oneida Casino has the perfect venue and hosts one of the best festivals in the world. The festivals give fans an outlet to forget all the problems in the world. Many of us plan a year in advance to see these wonderful showcases of talent. Musicians and fans alike feel that the festival is a family reunion. Not only do you get to see your old friends but make new ones as well. The casino has given us the opportunity to see several musical acts at one show. There are not enough rockabilly related festivals here in the States. In order to keep the music alive and give a proper venue to the younger acts, more festivals need to be created and not limited. Festivals like the Rockin’ 50’s Fest help younger acts broaden their fan base. Also, the acts from the 1950’s are getting older, and we lose a couple every year. Soon there won’t be any left to participate in these festivals. It is important to teach our children and introduce new fans to the music before it is too late. We, the fans, are asking you to please reconsider the idea of not having another festival at the Oneida Casino. Rockabilly needs you. The musicians and fans need you. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
(The Undersigned)
